Mike Bouchard, one of five Republican candidates for governor, is proposing a constitutional amendment to require government to mirror the private sector.
Bouchard wants wages and benefits for public employees to be within 3 percent of comparable jobs in the private sector.
The Oakland County sheriff also proposes a part-time Legislature and moving public employees to a defined contribution retirement plan, much like a 401k.
Also seeking the GOP nomination in the Aug. 3 primary are Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra and state Sen. Tom George. Democrats seeking their party's nomination Aug. 3 are Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.
